Is this London's most popular venue for drawing classes?

If you want to start drawing or continue building on your current drawing skills, check out the classes at historical Citylit in central London.

Throughout 2023 I've been taking drawing classes at Citylit in London. Citylit is an historical adult education centre right in the heart of Covent Garden.

It opened in 1919 and in 2023 was awarded an Outstanding rating by Ofsted inspectors. You can read more about its history here.

Citylit offers a large selection of online and in-person courses and the people I've met there are friendly, engaged and from hugely interesting diverse backgrounds.

In my recent drawing classes we've focused on fundamentals like:

  • understanding where the light source is

  • shadowing to create 3D

  • emphasising lights and darks

  • perspective

In the above drawings I've used charcoal and pencil, drawing from still life. I tend to jump straight into the detail without forming the overall image first, which is leading me to skew the perspectives. And it took me a long time to realise that the lights and darks need loads of contrast to create something realistic. It's all a work in progress though ... and great for perfectionistic tendencies because you realise perfection is not possible but you can still create something unique, if not totally true to the original.

Taking time out to really focus on something is very meditative and I leave the class feeling relaxed and fulfilled.
